Summary

Based on the Pergaian buildings clearly dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. and those thought to have been built at this time, the book seeks to identify the urbanization process of the city during these centuries. It examines how the Hellenistic appearance of the city changed over time by evaluating the factors affecting this process within the peculiar historic conditions of the period.  It also looks at how much the Hellenistic tradition retained its presence and how Romanisation affected this process. Another purpose of the present study is to propose dates for buildings of unclear dating based on available evidence and to revise the dates for the buildings with clear dating studied here. Another issue handled within this study is to identify certain or likely locations for the buildings and building parts known to have existed because of inscriptions, such as the Bouleuterion and Sebaste Agora, but are not localized to date.
