Arykanda: A City with Two Settlements – Doç. Dr. V. Macit TEKİNALP

Register
The city, located approximately in the middle of the Finike-Elmalı highway today, is built on the northern slopes of the Arykandos Valley. Arykanda, one of the important cities of the Eastern Lycia Region, takes its name from a geographical indication, originating from the Luvian word Arykawanda, meaning “place beside the steep rock.” The city, built on terraces between 700 and 900 meters above sea level, covers an area of approximately 180 acres.

Archaeological excavations in the ancient city of Arykanda were initiated in 1971 by Prof. Dr. Cevdet Bayburtluoğlu, revealing examples of both public buildings and civilian architecture spanning from the late 4th century BC to the 7th century AD.

In this presentation, new findings related to the Roman and Late Antique periods of the city, uncovered in archaeological excavations conducted in the ancient city of Arykanda from 2011 to 2022, will be presented.
