Sunken City of Kekova

Archeological Surface / Underwater Surveys in Kekova Island – Underwater Protection and Rescue Excavation

Kekova, which is the biggest island of our country on the Mediterranean coast, has a steep
slope and mountainous structure. Although the mountainous structure of the island is not
suitable for agriculture, it also restricts urban settlement. For this reason, only three parts of
the island have coastal settlement. The ports and structures in the coastal parts of the island,
also known as the Sunken City in the region, remained underwater due to a massive
earthquake in the region in 141 AD. In scientific studies carried out on the island, the general
evaluation of Kekova Island settlements and underwater cultural assets, the history of the
island's ancient settlement, commercial relations, civil architectural features, its position and
importance on the ancient maritime trade route, its relations with the mainland and its
relations are being investigated. . The underwater coast of the island there are many different
types of amphoras and dozens of daily-use containers. This amphora density and the existence
of the finds from every period in a long process like two thousand hundred years reveal
another important feature of Kekova Island. In addition, the fact that the island is located on
the sea-trade routes in the east-west direction on the southern shores of Anatolia shows that
the Mediterranean commercial activity has been one of the important centers where the
commercial activity can be observed continuously in two thousand hundred years.
