Aphrodisias in Caria has one of the most complete profiles of statue use from the Roman and late antique periods (first to sixth centuries AD). Unusually, a significant number of monuments from the site survive complete with base, statue, and portrait head – often too with their precise ancient urban context. This talk briefly introduces the site, discusses the interaction of statues and texts on their bases, and focuses on a number of newly excavated finds of the late antique period.
