Settlement Organization in Pisidia during the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Periods

The ancient region of Pisidia covered the modern provinces of Burdur, Isparta and Antalya, in the north of the Taurus Mts. in southwest Türkiye. Hosting important cultures since prehistory the region was known for its warrior people during antiquity. The rough terrain of Pisidia is characterized with ravines cut by streams and also housing the road network. When substantial urbanization started in Anatolia in the Hellenistic period Pisidia also assumed its own cities, above all Termessos, Selge and Sagalassos. However, the Pisidian cities distinguish themselves from those in other regions with regards to planning and organization thanks to their rough topography. With the Roman Imperial period urbanization activities accelerated and the cities were surrounded with quarters of countryside production and farmsteads scattered around. This lecture will deal with the urbanization and the land use in the hinterland of the cities in Pisidia.
