AKMED Monetary History and Numismatics Summer School is an intensive one-week summer school offering a broad chronological survey of monetary history and numismatics from Ancient to Byzantine periods (c. 650 BC– AD 1453). Lectures will be given zoom online by Professor Dr. Oğuz Tekin of Koç University AKMED and Dr. Peter van Alfen of the American Numismatic Society. The program, designed for newcomers to numismatics, will give students an introduction to Greek, Roman and Byzantine numismatics. It also aims to give them the tools to apply numismatics to their studies in the fields of archaeology, history and art history. Those who complete the program are entitled to receive a Certificate of Participation.

The program will cover the basics of numismatics as well as offer an introduction to the rich contribution of numismatics to the economic and monetary history of the Ancient and Byzantine worlds.
The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students in the universities in Türkiye and abroad as well as to some non-student applicants. Priority will be given to undergraduate and graduate students.
Since the language of the program is English, a working knowledge of English is required. After the applications,online interviews will be made with the selected candidates and theywill be admitted to the program according to the interview result.
Students are expected to attend all classes. Reading, summarizing and discussing the articles from the reading list is another required component of the course.
The participation fee for the program is ₺150 or $20 or €20. After accepted into the program, this amount should be deposited into the account of a charity to be determined by AKMED and sent to the email address of oyanardag@ku.edu.tr in the mail attachment.
After the participants are selected, they will receive a course package with a list of select articles and texts about numismatics. The package will also include a list of important numismatic websites with catalogues and materials available online.

Oğuz Tekin is a professor of Archaeology and History of Art at Koc University and is also the Director of Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Center for Mediterranean Civilizations. He specializes in ancient numismatics and commercial weights. He is also the editor of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Türkiye and the Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum projects. In the frameworks of these two major projects, Prof. Tekin publishes the coins and weights collections of the museums in Türkiye. He deals also with the monetary history, ancient economy and markets of the cities of Asia Minor from the Archaic period to the end of Roman Imperial period.
Peter van Alfen is an economic historian with wide ranging interests, who works on problems of ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern monetary, fiscal and trade systems spanning the Late Bronze Age to the early Byzantine period. He has published on a variety of topics including Mycenaean administration, Athenian public finance and coinage, market regulations, Arabian monetization, and Late Roman amphoras. As Curator of Ancient Greek Coins at the American Numismatic Society (ANS) in New York City, Dr. van Alfen’s recent projects include studies of archaic coinages and those in the name of Alexander the Great. Dr. van Alfen is also director of the ANS’s Summer Graduate Seminar in Numismatics and is an Adjunct Professor in the Classics Department at New York University.
