Structures in Antiquity
A Journey Through the Structures of Ancient Anatolia: Discover, Learn, Share!



As Koç University Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Center for Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED), we invite you to join our online educational program “Structures in Antiquity,” which we will hold from 18 to 22 November, for an opportunity to explore and gain insight into the rich cultural heritage of Antiquity through expert views. This exciting event will host 10 academics who are experts in their field and offer a deep dive into ancient structures. The 10-session online program, which will be conducted over one week, is limited to 30 participants. The program aims to attract the participation of undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students studying in the departments of archaeology and ancient history at universities who wish to gain more professional knowledge on the subject. The enlightening lectures by expert academics provide a unique opportunity for students who want to understand the rich history and architecture of ancient Anatolia.

Language of Instruction: Turkish

Instructors: Academics specialized in the field of archaeology

Program Content: Each online lesson will last 60 minutes and be accompanied by PowerPoint presentations. At the end of each lesson, there will be a 20-minute Q&A session. The program begins with a comprehensive presentation on urbanism in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. It delves into buildings depicted on coins or inscriptions that mention structures, and examines the extraction of stones used to build ancient structures from quarries. The plans, functions of ancient buildings are examined as time allows, and the final online presentation focuses on the sculpture that enriches these structures.

Learning Outcomes The general goal is to present topics such as the understanding of urbanism in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds, the extraction of building stones from quarries, the depiction of buildings on coins, and the information that inscriptions provide about structures to the participants, all conveyed by expert academics. Participants will have the opportunity to hear the latest research on urbanism and buildings from experts in the field. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to those who successfully complete the program. This event, especially aimed at introducing ancient structures in depth, is expected to contribute to student participants’ future professional careers and, of course, to their general knowledge.

Requirements Participants are expected to attend all classes. A Certificate of Participation can only be granted to those who attend 75% of the lessons; those who do not meet this requirement cannot request a certificate.

Application dates: Applications for the program will be accepted starting from 7 October 2024. The application deadline is 21 October 2024.

Accepted candidates will be informed by 28 October.

Payments must be made by the end of the business day on 1 November 2024.

Timely payment is a prerequisite for registration.

The program will begin on 18 November 2024.

Capacity 30 participants.

Participation Fee The program is expected to receive a large number of applications. The participation fee for the online courses has been set at 500 TL. This fee will be paid through a payment link sent to accepted participants. Registration will be completed once payment is made. In case the program is canceled by AKMED due to force majeure, the fees will be refunded to the participants. No refunds will be made in cases where participants do not attend, partially attend, or drop out of the program.

Payment Deadline The last date for fee payment is 1 November 2024. In this event where tradition and knowledge meet, discover the mysteries of the ancient world and trace the footsteps of the past. We are looking forward to seeing you.
